In 1990 men and women drawn from every section of the community came together in the centre of Manchester to enjoy breakfast and to share in prayer. They have met regularly ever since in the Manchester Town Hall
What is its purpose
The Prayer Breakfasts are arranged to enable people to gather in a friendly atmosphere and in prayerful concern about the life of the city and the surrounding region
Who attends
People derawn from industry, commerce, education, the professions, politics, voluntary service and public bodies, many holding positions of great resposibility, unite in prayer
What happens
Attention is focused upon particular areas of concern such as urban alienation and depravation. Information is exchanged on work being carried out to enrich the life of our community, particularly amongst the homeless and rootless. The Prayer Breakfasts have considered specific areas such as Wythenshawe and Harpurhey and particular projects such as rebuilding of the City centre after the terrible bombing
Who contributes
We all share in prayer- frequently with visiting speakers who range from national figures and leading industrialists to MP's, Councillors and voluntary workers
What links does it have outside the City
The Prayer Breakfasts in Manchester are closely associated with the Annual Prayer Breakfast in Westminster convened by the Lord Chancellor and the Speaker of the House of Commons;the Parliamentary Prayer Fellowship, and the United States Prayer Breakfast held in Washington under the ausicies of the President,Senators and Congressmen.
It is also linked with similar gatherings in major cities throughout the world
